Ball joint

Hi. I've been told by the garage that the front lower ball joints are worn and that means they need to replace both front lower suspension arms (which come with ball joints) at c. £1K! But I can see these online at £30/40 a pop. Anyone have this before

Xc90 66 plate (2017) 107K.

I do have a third party warranty who are refusing to cover as they say its wear and tear.

The reason garages suggest replacing the whole arm is because if you buy ball joints alone, by the time you pay the garage labour to press the old ones out and new ones in, there's not much difference in price between fitting a whole new arm.

I'm not sure about your particular vehicle, but Volvo generally don't sell the ball joints alone for these newer vehicles. They sell the whole arm.

Genuine arms are the way to go. Cheap aftermarket ones don't last. If you do manage to buy ball joints on their own, get a decent brand. £30/£40 a pop sounds a bit cheap to me and I can't see them lasting. Maybe ask the garage if they'll press old joints out and press new in, see what the cost is. I suspect it may be cheaper, but not that much.
