Default Intermittent engine noise...and another thing

Hi all,

Apologies if I have missed any previous posts on the same subject..I did search, honest!

I was wondering if any of you very helpful people could offer some advice on a couple of issues...

My C70 has developed a worrying noise from the engine bay. It is not constant, and I can only hear it when I am waiting in traffic. If I pull the steering wheel to the left or right, the noise increases and I can feel a vibration through the wheel. Apologies if this is a completely noob-type question....I'm guessing it may be something to do with the steering assembly, but I wouldn't know where to start.

Also, less worryingly, my boot-open warning light flickers on and off all the time. Could this be a microswitch problem somewhere that a novice could fix?

Many thanks for looking at this post, and also in advance for any help offered.

Sounds like the power steering fluid may be low. Is it like a whirring grinding sound? Don't now what to compare it to....
Anyway the lid for the steering fluid has a dipstick atached to it, I would check that first and top up as necessary

Thanks for the response, a whirring grinding sound pretty much sums it up perfectly.

If it is a low fluid level, would I need to buy some from Volvo, or would any make be sufficient?

Thanks again for your help

I also think is your problem. Any garage should be capable of advising you which type of oil is the most suitable to refill the power steering reserviour.

To be honest i dont know what fluid volvo use (new to them and all!) but it should give the specification in your handbook if you have one. Then you may be able to get some matched up at a auto spares place if its easier. If your fluid is low, get the leak checked out!
