Nose cones and early grilles
Simple one really...like your opinion before I cut up a perfectly good nose cone.
I have a 62 122s and want to maintain its front grille (with the heavy transverse grille) but the nose cone has rust in it. Can you modify a 66 nose cone to take the 62 grille - how difficult is this, is it just cutting out the 66 nose rebate and welding in a new more angular one?? If you know what I mean.. Cheers Baz |

hairyapple asks.....
Baz, by nose cone I assume you mean the sheet metal shell that holds the grilles? You limey's use such quaint terminology, I'm surprised the Nazi's ever knew what you were talking about. Have you tried removing one of the sections and holding it into the 66 cone? If you haven't got that option I can remove the grille from my '62 and try to hold it into the shell of my '67. and se if it looks like it would work.

We know all about you americans and your nose cones!!
Hi A,
Still dodging the draft?? Surprised they haven't called up all you 'old timers' to do a stint in Iraq yet!! I went to the 'Nam you know.....- Cheltenham Ho HO... I have held it up, the thing is, the recess that actually hold the 61 grille in place is a different shape in profile (e.g. in depth reaching back towards the radiator) than the later version. You can physically fit the 62 in the 66 hole (so to speak) as its just stands too proud. The hole is the right shape - just the wrong depth.. I just wonder what work is involved - or should I just patch the old 'nose cone'... B |

The very early grill is smaller than the slightly later one. My 64 looks the same but the opening is the same as the late alloy grills. If you can find a 64 that would give you the look or otherwise its going to be cut and weld.

hairyapple sez..listen, can you hear the sound of Rovers
slowly dissapearing into the sunset?
Baz-Many thanks for helping to save "Nam" from the Commies. Maybe now you could save it from the Capitalists. We're on speaking terms with them again and to prove it they're going to help us to locate the last of our MIA's, and in return we're going to build them a Disneynam with live ammo and lots of Mickey D's. That ought to teach them to f..k with the USA. Meanwhile, now that our staunched ally is bailing out, I'd love to sign up for Iraq if I could bring Geo W, Cheney and a few of their sidekicks along on patrol. Try using the '64 shell. You can paint it off the car and have it all set to install limiting the time your car is off the road. Otherwise repairing what you have may be easier if the damage is not too extensive. My '62 has a/c so it's hard to see what's going on in that part of the car and besides I havn't had time to bond with it yet. Last edited by hairyapple; Feb 24th, 2007 at 20:45. Reason: misspelling |
