Default Erratic temp gauge

I have one currently working temp guage (hurrah) and a faulty one, which works occasionally and would like to fix to keep as a spare.

I have heard vague refences to oiling pivots and 'soldering up', but would like something more specific to go on!

Oiling the pivots with clock oil is not a problem - anyone tell me what the electrical weak points are which should be re-soldered?

Is there a standard test proceedure with a meter one can use?

Thanks

John D

I'm pretty sure this is what your looking for, if not try looking way back in the dealves of old posts. Very common problem and has been covered many times.

Best of luck

Default Temp guage

Before playing with the guage itself check that the connector that is on the engine isn't faulty or the thermostat is working correctly.

Have checked these by substituting a gauge from my other car, which works fine. It's just the gauge itself which is at fault.

Thanks

If it's definately the gauge at fault simply get a replacement one. It will be easier than soldering things.

It's curiosity really. I want to know why the darn things fail and how you fix them - apart from the fact that the last time I needed one I had to try four before I found one that would work!
