Default 340's and power stearing?

did Volvo produce any 1.4 340DL's with power stearing? as my dad has a 1990 340 auto with what looks like an addon kit fitted, maybe it was fitted for one of the previous owners who was disabled i dont know. all i want to know is if this is a volvo factory fit why is it the volvo 340 oil filter wont fit, as the power stearing pump gets in the way, instead what was fitted was a filter about half the hieght of the volvo one. so at the moment my dad has had to put on the same filter type he took off, which i dont think is a good idea, but until i can find some more info on this setup im stuck.

Yes, PAS was available as an option on the 340, but was never standard spec. There was a 340 auto for sale here not too long ago with it fitted. Sadly, thats all I know!

cheers

James

Dear James, and all others who might be interested in this subject!

It is my holy grail to sort out the question of power steering on the 300 series. I love the cars (I have 5 of them) but am fed up of the heavy stering. I am trying to sort out out part numbers, suppliers, and cross applications. Volvo cannot help being restrained by corporate policy. Component manufacturers will not commit. Watch this space is all I can say. There will be a solution. Hopefully, another member might have the solution!

Best Regards,

Len Morris

My advice....find a 360 with it in the scrappers - parts should be interchangable! Strip everything steering related off, and then work out in 'slow time' what you do and don't need, then cross-reference the part numbers with your dealer.

I've got spare PS pumps before off 360s in great excitement - before noticing that the parts are the same as on 740s, etc! The reservior and maybe other parts too are 740 parts as well.

cheers

James

The 360 PS rack should fit provided there is nothing near the damper which are in different places, so the steering column will need to be changed also. You may also loose some turning circle.

Probably worth getting the proper pump brackets and pump from a PS 340, as I doubt the B2xx one will fit. There was a PS 340 in a scrap yard near me (Bangor NI) last year.

340 steering is not that heavy anyway, I wouldn't bother, you should try a non-PS 360.

I had 5 300s at a few years ago too, I was loathed to get rid of perfectly good cars. Down to 1 now.

I find my 340 steering too light now i have greased the steering rack ; makes quite a difference and you should have 27 psi in the tyres.

Dear Steve,

And every body else involved in this discussion! Thank you all for your inputs. I've now picked up a scrap 360GLT and the power sreering is going on my mint 340 1,7 GL. I'll let every body know part numbers and how it all turnes out.

Best Regards,

Len Morris
