If you decide to go non-OEM I have been fairly happy with the a2a system a local independent garage installed on my 940 when the replacement Volvo cat and front pipe rotted out, in my view prematurely.

I don’t think the cat they used was particularly great and if I were doing non-OEM again I’d probably get that from somewhere like BM.

In the past I’ve got good priced Volvo systems from Germany via ebay.de. However, many German suppliers have stopped shipping to the UK because of the ludicrous post-BREXIT VAT rules. Whilst personally in favour of BREXIT I do think it needed to be paired with a drastic and permanent reduction in the UK’s capacity for generating its own red tape!

Stainless steel aftermarket system if you're keeping the car a long time

Depends on the BM. They sell both type approved and non type approved. One costs 40, the other costs 200. Someone on the forum got a cheap one and has had high emissions readings on MOT, but is not sure if it may be a faulty sensor.
I've been pondering if i should risk buying one if this cheap units. But i don't won't to fail MOT and then have to change cat again.

On cars registered before 2001 in the UK, they don't need to be TA cats. Also it's much more likely to be a faulty sensor than the cat and given the service life of a Lambda sensor is 10 years or 100k miles and also if it was transferred to the new system, it's likely to have been damaged, i'd definitely suggest the sensor is dead.

I didn't know that was only in the UK. Thought it applied to whole Europe. Gonna check Spain specifically to see.
Have you ever bought any of these super cheap cats? Any opinion on them?

It was across the EU but since Brexit don't know if something different applies and as i know little about local Spanish/Portugese laws, i only mentioned the UK so a good idea for you to check locally.

Never bought a cheap (or any) cat, one of my beasts has no cat nor has ever had one, the other is still on its original from 1994. Might have to give it the dishwasher tablet treatment in a year or two but so far still doing its job.

Thanks to everyone for help. The car is now with my local classic Volvo specialist who thinks he has a system in stock or has ideas on a source.
