Well no easy answer but I would first put a belt back on and see if it will turn over by hand, if it will then your lucky (maybe)

Next its off with the head and see what your up against in the true light of day, decide then what you wish to do, often I think the devel you know is worth sticking with ?

I have just been through this with an "s" Reg s40 diesel, not worth around of drinks but it.s been in the family since new and all in all a good car so hopefully my work on it will pay off

You could look down the spark plug holes, and with the aid of torch with the long flex tip, inspect the crowns of the pistons (all 4) for intent marks from the valves.

I imagine that piston and valves probably met. Putting the clutch in wouldnt have stopped the engine turning over as it would still be idleing at 700rpm, unless you switched it off very quickly. The only way you'll know for sure though is to look.

134k on the original belt? Impressive.
