Question Volvo 2004 s40 won't start

Turned car off, left key in ignition for about 5 minutes, went to remove key but key wouldn't come out. Dash lights would come on, key would turn but not come out. Hooked up another battery in car tried to get key out, Key came out but car would not start even with a jump.Car has been running great.

Whack your gear knob downwards.
Read a user manual

I always thought the idea of forums was to share knowledge..

never understand the "read the manual" responses

it could be something faulty at the key barrel/ignitione ring end, or a bad starter motor. It is also worth checking the earth points from the battery to the gearbox housing. Sometims they corrode near the gearbox housing and would explain your starting difficulties

more liable to be an auto , with a sticky knob button, well documented on here for auto Volvo's ,you can when you break it get replacements from Volvo, and its a easy replacement.

Clean your sticky knob, remove all dirt and gunky stuff

and wait for the interlock to fail when the tiny microswitches fail,, they will, they are a PAIN to replace and alignment is impossible once you replace it, which you Will have to do, so get friendly with the "shift lock" button
