Default Rotor and pad life

My S80 has done around 17K miles. The brakes squeal when reversing only. The third year service is coming up in the next few weeks.

Questions: could the brake pads and/or rotors need replacing at 17K miles?

Also, is the brake squeal when reversing anything to worry about?

All drivers drive differently. I replaced my front pads after 170000 km, rear pads after 200000 km.
I don't know about the rotors yet. I've only driven the car 260000 km by now.

Have you tried looking at the pads and discs through the wheel, or taking wheel off? Any less than 4mm pad material theyre in need of changing, anything over 6mm theyre fine for a while yet.
As for squeel in reverse, everything is being loaded in the opposite direction to normal, thus mating faces that dont normally mate are, umm, mating, and other things. This unsettling is encouraging vibrations. Nothing to worry about at all, and as reversing is occasional I personally wouldnt worry until/unless theyre worn out.

if you drive a lot of low speed journeys with light braking , the rear pads can wear as soon as 25000 miles as they will have done a majority of the cars braking ..., The squeak is nothing to worry about it is dust between pad and carrier , nothing a clean up would not cure . The fact that there maybe dust around there does suggest the rear pads have done a lot of work .

Thanks all. I'll get the workshop to look at the pads and rotors when it's in for its service.

I recon on disks every second set of pads but mines a manual and I'm old school change down to slow rather than rely so much on brakes as is taught these days.
On my xc it's easy to see the outer pad but an occasional wheel off to check inner is always advisable. Disk wear is easily seen and assessed, when it comes near the mark again wheel off to measure and you know when to order new parts.
Fortunately mine does nothing like 18k miles between services as in my opinion that's far too long to let brakes go without inspection and if the owner is not confident to do it then who is assessing their condition between services. It too late when metal to metal graunching is heard.

Paul.
