Default Fluid type

can anyone advise me on the correct type of fluid to use ina BW 3 speed in a 1981 240DL? The haynes says type F or G but I can't seem to find any for sale anywhere. One factor checked in a Motaquip manual and said that Dexron type 3 would be OK. I dont want to put the wrong type in. I understand that some is always left after draining because of the torque converter and so that would mean a mix. I am assuming it has the correct type in now as it has a full Volvo history. The box functions fine but the fluid is darker than it should be.
Thanks

Have you tried your Volvo dealer?

Hi Mike
Yes I have tried my dealer and they are about as much use as a chocolate fireguard. The 'young lad' I spoke too said that all ATF was the same! The workshop foreman said they hadn't done one for many a year! I hace though through a local Land Rover specialist attempted to order some type 'F' or 'G' he says i was was they used in the early Rangies and he would try and get me some through Morris's oil.......all will be revealed on Monday! Ain't life complicated.
Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul;
I assume that your '81 DL has got a BW55 box. In which case Haynes is right, Type F is what you want. (I believe the change to Dexron was in '84.) As Type F is not compatible with Dexron, keep chasing the elusive Type F. It should still be out there.

ATF type F is sometimes labelled ATF type Ford. It is also used in the M47 manual box.

My local Halfords had ATF type F and type G on the shelf last week, so it might be worth a look in there (its a big Halfosrd, don't know if the smaller ones would stock.
