Default Volvo 740 CR-702 radio amp location

Hi
I've got the standard Volvo CR-702 radio/cassette in my 740 Turbo, I kept losing sound (usually when going over bumps) on the original unit even though the unit was still powered up and the display showed the radio station. Bought a new e/aerial and fitted it, didn't fix it. Then the stereo stopped working altogether mysteriously, so sourced an "as new" CR-702 and it powers up fine, aerial powers up but no sound at all now through the speakers, nor with a cassette playing -- all connections are ok I think on the back of the unit... This new unit came with a separate amp which I have not fitted, so am wondering whether it's the original amp which is kaputt, so would like to know where it's located and if the CR-702 has to run off a seperate amp as I don't recall the original unit had a lead present to plug this new amp I have got in so I am unsure whether my car already has an amp lurking somewhere or whether it was only an optional extra?!
cheers

try under the steering column or front seats, steering column most likely.

Correct, drop the dash panel from below the steering wheel, its located roughly above the throttle pedal, you'll see 2 plugs going into it, a round one and a square one

From memory the wiring from the radio looks like speaker wires, these go to the amp, there's no actual lead from the back of the radio.
