I read that such a thing exists for 7/9 series, but where does it go?! My car certainly doesn't have one.
I'm suddenly aware of it because the rest of my exhaust is falling off, and I don't want the downpipe to be hanging off the turbo and manifold with nothing else holding it if it does decide to let go. |

There is a simple hoop that attaches the down pipe to the clutch housing (B230FT 940). There should be a odd looking bolt/stud that the tabs on the hoop go over and another nut to clamp it tight to the pipe.
This is to take the engine twist torque off the manifold and turbo. After having a custom system fitted, they left out this bracket, and a few years ago I left out the stabiliser bracket for the bottom of the manifold. Almost immediately the custom exhust was fitted the turbo-manifold joint started leaking badly. I think there might be a link, but it hard to say for sure, I haven't taken it off yet. |

Mine was missing when I had a new exhaust fitted it was 9 quid from main dealers a simple bolt on job.

Mine had snapped from fatigue at last MOT : I made up a new one right there in the workshop : a simple strap of thin steel which bolts to the overlong bold in the bellhousing.
If you can see the bolt you can make/get a new strap. Jack it up.

My 1992 940 estate, 2.0L petrol, non turbo. Acquired used in 2005. Various parts of the exhaust system replaced piecemeal over the next few years, including a new front pipe but all pattern made from various motor factors. It was apparent that there should be some form of bracket between the bell housing and the front pipe (the bell housing bracket was still in situ but there was nothing between it and the front pipe. In 2012 the exhaust needed further attention and as I was about to fit a tow hitch and the non OE front pipe was again needing replacement I decided to remove the entire exhaust system whilst I fitted the tow hitch. Having decided to fit a genuine OE exhaust system I made enquiries with "Volvopartshop" who kindly emailed to me a "blow up" of the exhaust system which showed the bracket components. I will try to retrieve a complete description and part numbers and supply them in a future post. For the present, the bell housing bracket (VO1357917) is connected to the front pipe by a device which I can best describe as a "huge very heavy gauge steel paper clip". (VO1276583). This presumably holds things quite firmly but does allow a very slight degree of vibration movement. There are other small shaped plates and nuts and bolts to secure the pieces together. These are the parts the details of which I will need to attempt to retrieve.

Sorry, I haven't yet figured out how to post images but I'll try to describe.
Imagine a foot or so of thick steel bar bent in the middle into a "U" shape. Then with it laid flat, half way down the legs of the "U", bend them up and back towards the closed end of the "U". I cannot comment on other engines but on my B200F engine the OE down pipe is two pipes from the manifold which merge together in the area of the gearbox. Just forward of the merging there is bracket welded across the top of the two pipes which has a captive nut welded to it. The items I couldn't remember are "Shaped Plates" (VO1306768) which have a hole in the centre. The "paper clip" is aligned longitudinally on top of the front pipe bracket with it's open ends lying down on to the bracket and pointing to the rear and the two adjacent bends against the bell housing bracket. One of these plates is used to clamp the bends to the bell housing bracket. (Sorry, I cannot remember the bolt size) and the other to clamp the open ends of the "paper clip" to the down pipe. I hope that makes sense to someone. Another small point. The pattern front pipe I first bought had a threaded collar welded to it in the single pipe section. Presumably to accommodate a pre cat lambda sensor. My engine doesn't have one so I had to find something to close the hole with and the first part of the pipe to corrode through was the weld around that collar. The OE front pipe also had such a collar but was supplied with the hole already blanked off with a Blanking Plug" (There are two different lengths of "Blanking Plug": 8mms (VO948404) and 12mms (VO960629) and if required are listed as "classic" parts which are ordered from Sweden.) I didn't know which size I would need so I ordered both but when the pipe arrived with a "Blanking Plug" already fitted I didn't need to use them. When fitting the front pipe I tightened it fully to the manifold then loosely assembled the support bracket so that it was not in any tension. Tightened the clamp to the bell housing bracket first then tightened the clamp to the pipe itself. Hope this is helpful. If I'm teaching granny to suck eggs then I'm sorry. I think Ian's "paperclip" is for a totally different two-downpipe setup by the sounds of it.
Pete's is the same as mine, but mine was offcentre, not symmetrical.
