Default Heater

Hi Folks,

First frost of the year this morning in Scotland.....Made me pay some attention to the heater.

Now, every review I have read on the Amazon mentions the "volcanic" heater. I can't seem to get more than a lukewarm response....

I have all three levers pointing down, and I "think" they are operating the cables...(lacking a user guide, I have tried lots of positions !).

My temp guage rarely moves from the stop unless I'm in traffic, even then it will only creep up to the midway point and the heater is better. The car does not seem to loose any water except sometimes after a fast run where some water will be ejected throughg the overflow, (this is rare).

Do I need a rad blind or electric fan? or is there some other problem.......I have a new thermostat but have not yet got around to fitting it.

Thanks in advance !

Gerry

I suggest you fit that thermostat! end of problem .. and if it is not a 92 C one ( marked on it ) change it for a 92 C for a good heater .

Job for tonight then !

As I recall, it came with a funny wee round rubber seal....Any other gaskets required??

Cheers

The problem with my heater is stopping it blowing out very hot air! two of the cables had come loose from their stops so the lever things weren't moving the cables. Now I've sorted that out I can open and close the defr and floor vents, but still get hot air wherever the temperature one is.

Hi Gerry,

Lever positions all down is correct for all open & full heat. Left & middle levers control the feet & windscreen screen valves on the heater box & right lever is the thermostatically controlled temperature valve (on the bulkhead). However check the operation of the cables & see that they are moving their relevant parts properly, as they can appear to be operating correctly when at the heater end nothing is happening. Also, the way the valves work is such that when clearing the windscreen, close the lever directing air to the feet, to get a better flow of hot air to the screen.

However the fan is controlled separately - from memory it's the switch immediately on the right of the heater controls. It's unusual in that the first click is full blast & the second click (i.e. all the way out) is half speed.

If correctly installed, the thermostatically controlled heater valve has a capillary tube inside the heater box. To replace the valve properly, the heater box needs to be split etc, which is a lot of work. However when installing a new valve, the capillary is just tucked out of harm's way against the bulkhead instead, then the thermostat doesn't cut in & the heater really lets rip with the temperature!!! .

Hope this helps

Paul

Hiya,
You dont need any other gaskets, just fit the stat with its rubber seal and your heater will be piping hot again rest assured. I stupidly ran my car without a stat last year after an overheating episode, however, gave my boss a lift to Milton Keynes station after the xmas meal and took the car 20 mins to clear the screen and he nearly froze to death. I was alright, had overcoat and gloves...he didnt. Fitted the stat the next weekend and back to shirt sleeves in the snow again...mmm toasty.
Boss wont ask for a lift again though so theres the silver lining from that episode !

good luck

Stuart
