I'm buying the `iron maiden` of the volvos
I dont know an awful lot about these wonderful land battleships, except what Ive discovered online...i.e. not a lot! Im looking at one in quite good condition for the princely some of £950- with a years ticket.
Its a column change auto with the horizontal type speeedo, twin carb, `71 (tax free of course), its a kind of sea blue colour that is supposedly original-theres a little rust but non structual and has the bull nose style bumpers. anything particular I should look out for on the old ironclad? |

Can we safely presume that you mean a 140?

RE: reply to mr P Milnes
Generally speaking providing it is fairly clear of "tin worm" the major rust problem is the windscreen surround. This is very expensive to repair so make sure that it is OK before you purchase. If ok the price is reasonable, if a little on the high side. Best of luck with it and I am green with jealousy as I would like to rescue one of these myself, engine and gearbox would be immaterial as I have a turbodiesel lump and box with intercooler which would certainly endow it with mph and mpg. If anybody has one they want to give away and they are fairly near to me in South Wales.......plug.
All the best, Peter. |

3 litres straight six..how smooth??
Hi there,
How are these old 3 litre straight sixes? the only old volvo ones I've heard have been the 2.8s in a 240.. I don't mean in how much do they break, but how 'good' are they as engines i.e fast/smooth? |

RE: 3 litres straight six..how smooth??
For a Volvo I would about say they are the queen of the lot.
I've had mine since 1971. Due to a lot of noise I installed a B30E engine about a dozen years ago (put my carb manifold on it) and replaced the worn cam with an IPD street performance cam. It is a real goer. It turned out that the noise was from the infamous fiber timing gear, and that there was no measurable wear on any of the crankshaft bearings and only 5 thou at the worst point of the cylinders. The cam was pretty badly worn but a new cam and a set of rings would have put it in first class shape. It had 204,000 miles on it at the time. Yes it is smooth. Suspension bushings need to be good, wheels and tires true and balanced, etc |
