I'm pretty sure they're not.

Some grills especially those in DRIVe models have blanking panel's that (may) render them unsuitable for other models and over time the fixings on the back that clip them to the nose cone may have changed too (style, or location, or both).

No Face-lift cars have different front bumper, headlights, etc so you'd need to change the whole lot.

Pre-facelift cars can swap grills between S40 MkII and V50 however. So you can swap the standard chrome 'waterfall' grill for an S40 'Egg Crate' grill if you can find one on ebay etc.

There is currently a front bumper on Ebay with the S40 "egg crate" grille. I prefer this grille to the chrome version on the V50.

Let me just clear this up for V50/S40 owners (C30 & C70 is slightly different).

You have got Pre-Facelift which is MY 2004 - 2007 (MY = Manufacturers Year, usually middle of the year to middle of the year (bit like an academic year). Then there is Post-Facelift (usually referred to as facelift) this is MY 2008 - 2012.

There is a few vehicles that land right on the changes but we'll consider them anomalies.

Pre-facelift S40 and V50 grills are all exactly the same and all interchangeable, S40 to V50 or V50 to S40. V50 had the waterfall type and the S40 had the egg crate type as standard.

Facelift S40 V50 grills are once again all exactly the same and all interchangeable, wether it be standard or R-Design!

There is 2 standard grille types:

With the earlier facelift 2008 - 2010 grilles they still had the older square black Volvo centre badge and then 2010 onwards seen the introduction of the 'Iron' grille badge (big Volvo badge).

The 2 grille types then came in 2 grille flavours:

Standard - Bright Chrome surround
R-Design - Brushed aluminium looking surround (plus R-Design Badge).

So basically:

Pre-facelift 2004 -2007 all interchangeable
Facelift 2008 - 2012 all interchangeable
Pre-facelift/Post-facelift - NOT interchangeable.

HTH,

Thumbs up facelifting the '07 to 11 or 12

Thanks for making stuff so clear so far.
Can you add more to your statement "There is a few vehicles that land right on the changes but we'll consider them anomalies".

I think my S40 was manufactured September '07 and considered old design (04 to 07) going by the bumpers and lights but I know the first facelift models (08 to 10) were also manufactured in the last half of 2007.

My side mirrors, and RIMs resemble the '08 to '10 models but the rest look 04 to 07. There is also a look in the design elements I can't put my finger on that is different from the earlier '04 to 06 models.

Can you shed some light or point me where I can get more info. I plan to change the from and rear bumpers to add newer lights from '11 or '12 R-Designs. Also wonder if bumpers fit straight or need extra internal fittings and if the front and tail lights use the same connectors/voltages etc.

Sounds like your car was maybe registered Sept 07 but was built earlier in the year, think your V5 form will tell you the manufactured date. If it was built Sept 07 then it should be a MY08 car and have all the new bits on it.

If you take a picture of your dash/gear and console area/bumpers I can tell you what you've got.

For your other questions if you read this thread it should answer almost everything for you (get your reading glasses on): LINKY!
