Default Probably a daft question

Just bought a 2004 V70, fitted with a Volvo detatchable tow bar and the new style electrical socket.
I was just checking the spare wheel and was a bit surprised to find a battery next to it. I guess this has to do with the towing accessories, but would like to know the reasoning for it.
All my previous vehicles just had a tow bar and electrics. The caravans had the battery and this was charged from the car.
A bit of enlightnement woukld be appreciated.

Another silly question, but what does the tow ball lock key look like?

Said it was a daft question. Had a look under the bonnet as I was convinced that there was one there as well. But no, it is in the boot.
Talk about feeling silly.....
