Does anyone recognise this new carpet set from the 1970's?
First of all... Hi!
It's my first post here, on this friendly forum, and I thought I'd start off by asking for some help in identifying this carpet set. They came into my possession through an old gent who said he had bought them off a Volvo dealer around 1976. I have not seen this kind of quality in a car carpet since the likes of the Rover P5's etc. Any ideas as to what Volvo model they fit? Last edited by helphos; May 26th, 2009 at 14:55. |

Most of that carpet set is for an Amazon \ 120 Series. I have a black set in fair condition that I pulled out of the wreckage of a 122S in Cwtnewydd.
The central cover is for the transmission tunnel and the rears are for the rear passenger footwells....probably for a four door car. The driver's mat with the heavy rubber Volvo logo looks a bit weird though....mine has a completely different shape with a circular cut out on the right hand side for the dip \ main beam button. Perhaps there were variations on a theme, This is mine, the shape is different. I've never seen a set in that colour and in that condition. They are very rare. Do you have the massive half inch cleat thing that screws the rear cover nearest the camera into the floor? If you look in the center of the rear cover you can see a hole where it attaches. It has a little plate as well that fits below it. Even my battered set is of very high quality and didn't take much to bring up decent. Quite a set you have there.

I'd have said that it's more likely to be a very early 140 series (before the remote change gearbox was introduced) rather than Amazon, more by process of elimination (not convinced it's Amazon, and 140 was the only other to have the long gearstick).

Thanks for the input guys! It's still a bit of mystery then...

jakobandhismakarov - Thanks also for posting up the photos. I don't have the cleat you show (and I'm not sure if the carpet has any provision for it). The material quality is exceptional and I dearly wish [they] still made cars this way. ...it does look a very close match to your carpet though! Looking at jakobandhismakarov's carpet and the cut away on these red one's; the drivers right foot side, here, maybe for a foot rest if the vehicle had an automatic transmission, plus the width of the pedal area is so small, compared to J's, that it may only allow enough room for 2 pedals. ??? If it is auto; then a remote gear lever is a definite possibility. Perhaps a Borg-Warner BW35 three speed automatic transmission (1964 Volvo Amazon) ??? Alternatively, could the cut-away (directly above the rubber Volvo insignia) be for a floor mounted accelerator pedal? The cut-aways at the rear of the tunnel section could be for seat belt stalks? (...the tunnel, of course, denotes a rear wheel drive vehicle.) Somewhere prior to 1976. 222s - some good thinking there! Citizen.Agfa - Hmmm... the mystery deepens! Any more thoughts? ... furthermore, the rear set in my 144 has a hole just like the rear set shown above; the hole accomodates the two front-seat-belt buckle sockets (which are mounted on a single bracket).

Could the gent have got it wrong and could it be 1986 and could they be big enough for a 7 series?? It's just that you get those all red/pink interior 7 series, they sell for lots of money on Ebay, personally I think they are awful
