T4 Tuning
Hi everyone, my first post.
I'v recently bought my first turbo car, a 1998 S40 T4. I'm looking at fitting a boost gauge, but aren't exactly sure which type to go for ?? Can anyone offer any assistance. I'v also just got this off ebay, hopefully it'll go on the car once i get a boost gauge sorted. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...e=STRK:MEWN:IT Any other basic tuning advice, i'v heard about tweaking the wastegate actuator rod ?? whats the effect of doing this ?? Thanks for any advice anyone can offer Andy |

RE: T4 Tuning
hi there,
Most people would recommend the same basic tuning advice for any turbo car, service regularly, do an oil/filter change in between services if possible, use a performance air filter, less restrictive exhaust and good fuel- this is really important if you are going to be using an mbc.. shell optimax is the best for the T4- 98.x ron or 2nd best probably BP ultimate/ esso super unleadeded. turbo cars should be allowed to warm up first before driving them hard ( needle halfway is warm for my T4) and also if you have been driving it hard then get into the habit of letting the car sit at idle for at least 2 minutes to allow it to cool down before switching off; this will lenghten the life of your turbo. maybe one of the other users can recommend a boost guage to use; i bought a BSR one which turned out to be inaccurate by a couple of psi when they checked it on a rolling road. fortunately nothing in my engine seems to have been damaged by it running at 1.2-1.3BAR when i though it was only at 1.1BAR, (according to the guage) if it had been any other engine the internals would probably have bent. if you get a chance, get the car dynoed at a reputable rolling road, they can do a power run for you and give advice about how your car is running and what may help to improve it. An ecu remap would be best but from my own experience i find the boost controller a good inexpensive altenative route to more power, but it has been limited by the fact that i still have the standard exhaust in situ which is strangling the air flow. tampering with the wastegate actuator is done basically to achieve what an mbc does, but without the same control over what boost you end up at. it's pretty dodgy tuning and i would never recommend it. hope this is of some help, enjoy your new car, they're great. jacqueline. |
