V40 Wiper Issues
Hi All, I have a V40 registered in 2013. At first all was good until we hit the typical British weather. The wipers started to smear in my line of vision, questioned this with Volvo who completed a tech report came back with a suggestion of changing the blades to another make - ok tried lasted about 3 months then it happened again. Problem I have now is the noise that the right hand wiper makes when in use and the smearing. Tech report submitted to Volvo and this time heard nothing!! Getting to the point now where I wish I'd never brought one!! Is anyone else experiencing this same issue or has and how did you get on sorted or not. All help appreciated

I'm guessing it's the same problem I've got. The wiper arms are attached to the bodywork under the scuttle, the shaft upon which the arms are affixed runs through an approximately triangular shaped piece of plastic containing an eccentric plastix cyliner and is held to the body by three 10mm bolts. The problem (for me anyway) seems to be that the plastic eventually grinds away making the round cylinder go oval, meaning the arm is no longer properly supported. In my case, it's so severe that the wiper has to be held up a bit to close the bonnet, and the constant wiper noise during use drives me crazy.
I'm hoping swapping out the old triangualr plastic bit for a newer one will fix the problem, handy for me as I happen to be breaking a V40 right now, so it looks like you'll need a breaker's yard. Dunno if volvo still make these bits, if not they should because it's innevitably going to wear out. Should be made of metal really, with bearings. :-) |

(I think the above post from canis refers to the previous generation V40). |

All that needs doing is cleaning the screen thoroughly , the contaminant can be very hard to remove but try a very fine polishing compound like the finest grade of Farecla . you might need new blades if they are impregnated with oil etc . you can soon tell when the screen is clean . when you are happy with it always use volvo screen wash which is spirit based and leaves no trace whatsoever it has no salt like cheap screenwash which blocks jets , especially heated ones . leaves stains on paintwork and can even leave material on the screen to cause a smear .....

Ah, yeah, sorry I missed the 2013 bit. I had an "Ooh, I can answer that one!" moment and got all excited. I've had a few good bits of advice on this very freindly forum, and thought I could finally contribute something in return. Oh well.

Thanks for the comments. Volvo cleaned the windscreen with a specialised product when they had my car to complete the tech report, didn't make a difference! Volvo also put new wiper blades on as well, didn't make a difference! Also had new windscreen put in, didn't make a difference! So back to square one!

well as i said it is not the glass or the rubber , It is the contaminants out there flying around and the cleaning procedure not good enough .
