Blue smoke only at startup on most cars is usually due to leaking valve stem seals.

Shell Helix Ultra (Full synthetic) is usually 5/40 it may be a bit thin for your car. Changing to a full synthetic from mineral at your mileage may not be a wise choice as it will tend to remove carbon build up and cause smoking. Agree likely due to leaking valve stem seals.

Thanks for that Chris it is not a choice that I made the car has always been main dealer serviced and the only way i know that it has shell helix 10/40 in it is that they left a small top up botle in the car, would changing to a different oil help the problem? & it has never used any oil between services & still performs fine.

cheers allan.

Hi Allan,
As the guys said sounds very much like the stem oil seals ,i had the same problem when the car was left idle and it was started a puff of blue smoke would appear then it would clear itself after a 30 seconds or so ,i had a volvo dealer give me a quote and i nearly fained the labour is expensive parts are inexpensive, the car ran puffing smoke for about 6 months until i had a reason to get the stem oil seals done ,a pipe split and the head gasket blew.the joy of owning one of these cars. (still worth it)

Hope this is of some help

Maybe some confusion, Shell Helix in the blue contianer is a semi synthetic 10/40 It's a fine oil and should be OK for your car (I use it in the wife's Golf).
The Ultra (dark grey container) is a full synthetic 5/40, agian a fine oil used it in my T5.
If the smoke clears in 2/3 revs and you're not using much oil I wouldn't worry about it.
