I wonder if one of the jets is blocked - the one that puts in an extra squirt when you throttle.

you could try spraying carb cleaner into the carburetter itself with engine running or try some injector cleaner in your petrol tank, if they don't work you will have to remove the carb and carefully strip it down and clean the jets out.

Try the easy options if they don't work remove the carb then carefully strip it down, take your time, use good clean close fitting screw drivers when removing the jets, you will also need new gaskets.
Work on a clean flat surface(i used to use a table covered with paper) and don't be tempted to over tighten anything when you put it back together, the brass jets can strip their threads easily.

i would go for the accelerator pump jet being loose and flooding the engine when you put your foot down has fuel economy suddenly got worse? take the air filter off and look down teh carb whilst you open the throttle is there a nice fine jet that sprays down the barrel or is there a flood of petrol everywhere?

Well hav e a look down the carb and see which description above is happening .... a neglected 340 is likely to have the pump jet nut loose
