Hello all. I mentioned this in a previous thread relating to the fuel economy or the sudden drop in it but am goign to elaborate slightly in hope I can get a miraculous answer which won't cost me too much money to sort!.
the car is a 2003 D5 V70 I have a small oil leak from one of the intercooler pipes and I have a blow past on injector 5. I am consious of the oil levels between services. Periodically I have a hesitancy when accelerating and when this happens I have some smoke (hard to make out the color of the smoke when driving in rush hour in the dark) The question I have is this. My fuel econopmy dropped from telling me that 770 miles to empty tank from full to the lip to 630 miles to the empty tank for no apparent reason. I am not driving any different and instead of getting 48 + mpg I am gettign 40-41 mpg - driving sensibly. Question is would either of these two issues cause the sudden drop in fuel? What would be the most likely cause. Volvo says it would be about 400 quid to address the intercooler related leak and around 300 per injector to address any issues here. Any advice? Thanks in advance. Last edited by hercules; Nov 23rd, 2010 at 20:48. Reason: missing info! |

Your puffing injector, get it sorted before you cause more damage to the injector or cylinder head. You can get an injector kit for £20 of the dealer, new seating washer, clamp and bolts. If your lucky enough the injector hasnt siezed in then change it yourself if your confident enough or get a local garage to do it.
Leaking intercooler pipe and puffing injector would obviously create an inefficent engine. To be honest I dont know which is worse for poorer economy. Though I'd live with a leaky intercooler NOT a puffing injector. |

Yea its the injector clamp that really puts the injector inplace as they are slightly curved but straighten out once they have been tightened down and thus need replaced.
Also I believe a classic problem is the stripping of threads of the two injector bolts because of over tightening (I just heli coiled 6 injector bolts last month). Remember the two bolts only need to be at 13nm and a new injector clamp will take the torque.. If you get what I mean lol... |

You will see alot of a black treacley \ sealer like substance..almost like hard tar around the top of the engine obviously concentrated around the effective injector. It wont be hard to miss!

Still have a slight blow past on the injector but not as bad as it was. The oil leak around the intercooler is worse - when you look through the front of the grill you can see that the radiator has oil around the bottem of it and when you look in under the bonnet there is pleanty of oil apparent... the hesitancy is still there in that when you are doing 40mph say and go to accelerate, she seems to pause before starting to take off and puts out a right puff of smoke... (1200 - 1800 revs) once you get over 2000 revs there is no issues -the fuel econopmy has dropped way off again.
