What can@t a 240 tow?

Whilst in Scotland at the weekend my son Matt received a call from a friend of his who had broken down with a Transit on the A55 near the Brittania Bridge onto Anglesey. On arriving a quick check showed it was terminal with camblet gone. The Transit was a chassis cab but had a tri-axle Ivor Williams tipping trailer on the back complete with its load of their rally Astra. Tow rope attached the outfit was soon mobile and en route for their home some 12 miles away. They reckoned on the uphill the speed was about the same as if they were under their own power.
Matt's GLT does have the advantage of the turbo clutch and Jetex exhaust. It's not the first time we moved these sort of weights. I've towed a Toyota pick-up (loaded) with a loaded trailer behind it. Some years ago my friend had an old Fordson Dexta tractor which often needed tow-starting, often complete with a trailer fully loaded with whatever he was carrying. The sheer pulling power still never fails to amaze me.

My Dad managed to pull a Leland tractor on a trailer half way across Scotland a few years ago dont think he got into top though.

245 GLT on a transporter trailer from Inverness to Falkirk - mid-winter, blizzards, high winds - using a 244 DL manual. Slow uphill as you may expect, slow downhill for safety and slow along some level sections when driving into the gale.

I used my 240 to pull out half a dozen conifer stumps complete with roots using a tow-rope. Once lashed on, I just took up the slack and then drove off. I thought the rope had slipped off ,until I heard the ripping noise of the roots tearing out of the ground!

I first did this back in 1968 with my Ford Pop. Used a chain and hit clutch just before the slack was taken up. Did the same with my Amazon about six years ago and more recently with my 240s. It works damn well just be careful that the tree stump doesn't overtaske you!
What other ways have you guys abused your Volvosx over the years?
