fuel level
1994 Volvo 850 2.0 20v estate glt
hi there i have been told about this problem by the previous owner but haven't tested it out lol I have been told that i must not let the tank get below 5 on the gauge unless i'm on a long haul and my next stop will be a gas station as if i stop it when it below 5 and dont fill it up it wont start like its out of fuel and i know it not a faulty as when it was on 5 the other day i filled the tank right up and it only cost £39 and i have read that these have a 70 litre tank on them i would like to get this sorted out as its rather annoying having to keep the tank above half full any help or sugestions would be great

Not specific to volvo but is the petrol tank pulling a vacumn - ie when you removed the petrol cap you get a huge hiss, as this it could be prevented from starting (filling up earlier means you remove the vacumn because you've removed the petrol cap) - simple to try, run the car and removed the cap if a hiss then look for a blocked vent pipe.
Good luck Tony |

the tank will often hiss but its not vacuum its pressure and quite normal .. i would suspect a problem with the fuel pick up lines and one way valves in the tank pump/swirl pot ..
