loss of drive
Hi folks, just registered on this wonderful forum as I have a problem with my 52 plate s40
I had to call the aa today to get me back home. My s40 just lost all drive at a junction and i was wondering if anyone had any idea what the problem could be. The car was in first gear and as I went to pull away there was a bang and the car would not move and had to be pushed to a safe place. All gears seem to be obtainable but nothing happens when the clutch is released. Any ideas would be gratefully received. |

Are any pools of fluid forming under the vehicle?
Sounds like a clutch failure, hard to say how serious, Did it have a squeal when engaging first gear previously?

Mine squeals in first gear, but has done for sometime. Clutch isn't slipping.
I think your clutch has gone thou. I've had a few go bang before. But some damaged the DMF. |

Does sound like the clutch. Although check the driveshaft as well. I've thought I'd done the clutch in before and found my driveshaft had snapped like a carrot! Mind you that was on a Nissan :P

first place to check is drive shaft/CV joint, they can snap so there is just the stub going through wheel bearing, on the S40's they are nice and easy to check as the towing hook is central enough to just jack up front from middle.
If they snap clean enough its hard to even see, just be careful especially on NS as you don't want the inner CV joint to fall apart, could be Clutch or DMF destroyed but IMHO unlikely if happened with no warning, my money is just needs an 18 quid CV joint Last edited by cookie; May 18th, 2014 at 21:29. |

Like said above. Big Bang followed by no drive has to be a driveshaft/cv
