Default D5 auto box... done the fluid change... results....

seeing as this has been talked about quite a bit i thought i would post up what i ve been up to.

car is 2003 S60 d5 auto 163. 103k miles. fsh but no recorded change of the gearbox fluid.

old fluid was dark and at the correct level. wasn't brown and didn't smell burnt.

did the change. 4 ltrs of the correct fluid £15 p/ltr + vat.

in the past if i accelerated hard and backed off hard i would feel a clonk or hard shift from the box. also when cold the box was slow to change up and down. when at high revs the box would hold on the gear at the redline a while before changing.

now none of the above.... feels smoother overall but i m probably imagining that. but quicker shifts at higher engine speeds.... no clocks or hard shifts... feels smooth when cold.

all that is only my view as i didn't really perform any scientific tests lol.. no stopwatch on the shift time etc but i'm really happy with the results....

also did cam belt, water pump and antifreeze. so i'm more than ready for winter

cheers for reading

rob.

Rob,
It seems that you may have not completley changed the fluid but only 1/2 of it..................by reading your post it 'sounds' lile you just drained out the sump, approx 3 1/2 ltrs. I would advise to carry out the full flush , 7 - 8 ltrs & you will improve matters further.
Good luck
dave

PS; I trust you used the correct grade ATF ( 3309 spec)

You took the crank pulley off i guess to do the cambelt but did you renew the 4 stretch bolts on the crank pulley and the centre nut? Very important to do and to correctly torque...the main nut is 300 nm , this requires a counterhold as it is very tight . The 4x 13mm bolts are 35 nm + an extra 50 degrees .

thanks for the replies guys....

dave - yes your right that was what we did... i have read the details on here about the drain and flush.... spoke to the volvo dealership locally and the guy said that they only ever drain and fill. they did agree that the flush was better... but they also seemed of the opinion that any swarf/bits would come out in the drain. not sure on that one.... i got the fluid from them at the same time.

clan - the bolts were renewed but i'll check that they were set correctly.
