S40 1.8i 120K service - Main Dealer?
Hi All,
I bought my first ever Volvo yesterday - it's a 2003 S40 1.8i - the one with the Mitsubishi engine and I'd like some advice please. It's on 114,000 and coming up for 2nd cambelt service. The main dealer in Hereford quoted £740 (as a goodwill gesture!) and HLM in Bromsgrove quoted £450. How important is it to take the Volvo to a dealer or a specialist? Or is this something my local garage could handle? Would they be able to get hold of genuine volvo parts? Also do the Misubishi engines go on ferever like the Volvo ones?! Thank you so much for any help or advice Bizzarrini |

I had a V40 with the GDI engine and it was absolute pants. It had hesitation due to coking up of theinjetors due to sulphur rich UK fuel. Unless your car has been running on super ulnleaded or doing only longer trips yours may very well go the same way.
The Local Volvo dealers was saying they hate them. The engine was designed to work in Japan with sulphure free fuels. Direct injection engines are better now apparently. £740 is ridiculous and £450 seems very steep too, even if that includes tensioner pulley and water pump etc. To be honest if it runs OK I would get rid of it before it starts running rough as that will cost £800 or so at an indie! I got rid of mine within about 3 months of buying it and I was miffed as I loved everything else about the car but the duff engine. |
