960 speedo
Hi guys, I have been getting code 233, incorrect speedo signal on my 92. 960 auto. I believe that the sensor is in the back axle. Is it mechanical or electronic. How easy difficult to replace if need be? .

Hi,
The sensor is in the diff and takes a reading from a ring gear (one tooth of which if missing brings an error and costs arm/leg to repair! Or 2nd hand diff needs fitting). So an electronic sensor which detects magnetic pulses from the rotating ring. The cable is split to feed the speedo and the ABS ECU. Not sure what that code may be pointing to, could be a missing tooth, could also be a faulty cable or connection. Only way to check would be to check the connections each end. Check the point of split and make sure all cables are Ok. Des. . .

Just to be clear, are you saying that the sensor is inside the diff and can't be changed easily if need be, like an oil sensor for example?

Hi,
Ahhh.... Changing the sensor is easy enough, and they are about £100 each (less from Rufe perhaps?). The problem is if the ring gear is missing a tooth. If that is the case, then you need a new ring gear in the diff, an altogether different job. Hopefully it is a dodgy cable with a break or weakness in it somewhere. Or maybe one of the connectors is faulty or the sensor itself is at fault. DPA who sorted mine had only ever seen one case where the ring gear was at fault. But I was getting a different error code to you and in my case it was the sensor. Des. . .

I'm prety sure that it won't be the ring as the fault comes and goes. If it was the ring it would be permanent. Will try to get the car on a ramp and check out the connections.
