Default Can VIDA diagnose ICM/radio problems.

My 2006 2.5 XC90 has had an ongoing problem with the ICM/radio/6cd unit since I got it 2 years ago. It is finally starting to annoy me. What happens is that when you start up the radio comes on and after about 30 seconds it goes off - blank screen and silence - annoyingly taking the rear parking sensor alarm with it. The unit itself is still "on", as evidenced by pressing the right hand button brings up the bass fader etc. Switching off and on gives the "High Performance Sound" (sic!) message and then it goes into its torpid state. To get it back requires turning the car off and locking it for a few minutes till all the clicks and whirrs have completed. Restarting car brings it back - sometimes. Often (last two or 3 days) it doesn't and requires 2 or 3 of these restarts to bring it to life. I know its not the radio unit as that's been changed (twice) I have checked all connections under the seat - look fine. I contacted Lukas at volvodiagnostics who couldn't help diagnose the problem. Anecdotally, I think it may be temperature related - the problem hasn't really been evident for months over the summer but has reappeared again every day now, just as the weather turned colder in the last week or two.

So my question is - would VIDA be useful in this situation at diagnosing just where the problem might lie? Any other thoughts on how to rectify this are welcome

Thanks for any comments and input

Yes vida will help you to isolate the faulty device. The vehicle will need to be in the fault state when diagnosing. Experience of a proper working system will help a lot, as will experience of electronics.
Having a supply of spares will also help

Thanks Swiss. I dont have a VIDA/DICE myself. So wolud the best option be to take it to the main dealer (or independent) when the fault is manifest and ask them to run the VIDA over it ? Or are you saying the VIDA'rist would need more "specialised" knowledge ?

To be honest you probably can't expect a dealer to tell you much more than "it's broken, you need a new one"

I think a dealer wouldn't want to spend the time to try and help, it will also cost you a lot.
I would put a request on here if there was somebody close to you with Vida who could at least get you the codes and then go from there, it will be a time consuming tracing.
You may need to check if the radio that's in the car now is the original, as they have to be coded to the car, it may be a replacement.

When i had an issue with the sat nav unit it would cause the exact issues you are describing as the MOST network security kicked in. I used a fibre optic loop to take the sat nav unit out of the MOST network which let the radio etc work fine. I ended up sorting my problem and sold the loop to another member on here who used it to loop his faulty sub out.
There are a number of things that sit on the MOST network and if any one of them is playing up then it can cause those issues.
I do think that it would be worth you investing in VIDA,DICE set up as it allows you to do so many things and it pays for its self if you only need to use it twice.

You could try these guys who most likely can help you? Might be worth a call to see if they can confirm a diagnosis based on your exact symptoms:

Good point! I got the car from Seb at SLR in Warrington - he has VIDA i'm sure he will do me a "free read". I didnt think the radio and cd players were coded to the car - they have both been replaced with units with identical parts numbers.
