Default 5 Cylinder n/a RWD Project.

Hi All, this is my first thread so be gentle.

Like a lot of you I expect, I have long loved the sound of a 5pot engine, I suppose since back in the group B days, and the fact that these can now be found in dear old Volvo's for not much money, is screeming at me for my next project.

After a couple of years "out" from cars the last of which was a decent power turbo track machine, I am keen to build something special again, this time naturally aspirated.

So, my vauge plans/part requirements, which are still in the very early stages are:
  • Source a n/a 2.5 Volvo 5 cylinder engine
  • Find a suitable RWD gearbox
  • I will propbably leave the bottom end standard to save on costs, what do these rev to as standard?
  • Fit the head with larger valves, gas flow and find some suitable cams
  • custom exhaust and engine mounts (easy)
  • Throttle Boddies if the budget allows
  • Stand Alone engine managment
  • A suitable rwd car......sadly probably not a volvo (sorry).

I have an aim of 200bhp/tonne as a minimum, so approx 1200kg car would require 250bhp to make 211bhp/tonne. This should be fast enough to have fun and drive on or near its limit on a quite road or track, without needing to do over 150mph to stretch it's legs.

So that is it really, any tips, hints or help would be great, aswell as links to relevant parts, cars or ideas would be fantastic. I have read Austen's thread with interest, however this will be a much lower budget build, whilst still I hope being very tidy and properly throught out. Hopefully I can have 80% of the fun, for 20% of the cost....

PS The shortlist cars so far is: Mk2 escort (prob too expensive), an MGB/MGC GT, a Merc 190, BMW compact or my current favorite, a Mazda Rx7 FD3.
