Fuel pump woes
Where's the cheapest place to get a volvo/oem fuel pump, or has anyone got a spare they don't/won't need, stashed away somewhere?
Alternatively, what experience does anyone have of pattern part pump, will I get further with a volvo part? Stealers want £250 for said part (though wouldn't tell me the brand), i've seen bosch pumps for £150, was bosch the oem?

Are you absolutely sure it is the fuel pump itself that is at fault? I would first replace the fuel pump relay (located under the fuse box cover) and see how you go from there (the part is £35ish from a dealer - a lot cheaper & easier to fit than the pump).
Apologies if you have already replaced the relay.

I'm pretty sure it's the pump, normally when I turn the ignition on I hear a very strong (I'm sure I feel the car vibrating sometimes!!) but quiet humming (the fuel pump), but since she broke down the noise is more like an "asthmatic" buzz!?!
I'm sure that if the pump fires/actuates (not sure on terminology) and pressures the system, then the relay must be fine? I've seen replacement pumps to replace just the "pumping" part of the "fuel pump" (sorry thats the best description I can give!?!), I'd like to know if anybody thinks thats a good idea or should I just replace the whole thing?

Personally I would replace the relay first. Mine used to be quite audible on start-up but since I replaced the relay I can barely hear it (even standing outside!). Don't forget that the relay controls the pump so if the relay has gone then the pump won't work. I'd hate to see you spend £250+ on a new pump if a £35 relay is the problem. Good luck with it.

Easy way to check if the relay is the problem is to open it up and operate the contacts by hand.
If you decide the pump is faulty it may pay to extract the unit from the tank and have a look at the rubber connecting pipes as these can split and cause the problems your having. I'd think a pump only fix would save you a lot of money. |

I'm positive that its not the relay as the pump is buzzing, ie- the pump is being switched on by the relay.
I will check the pipes though before I shell out for said pump, that sounds feasible, thanks for the tip!
