Volvo P1800 B18 metallic tick noise
OK, re my previous post I have had chance to have a good butchers at my car to find the source of an odd tick / ping sound. I have removed the rocker cover and run the car.
The noise which is not on all the time seems to be coning from No 5 tappet , pushrod side. Could it be a sticking follower ?

It doesn't sound regular or rhythmical. Can you put a stethoscope type thing/metal pole etc against various ares to see if that helps pinpoint the noise? (Be careful). What was the last thing you did before it started making the noise?

Hi, sure
It seems to be coming from the No 5 tappet but at pushrod side I had just completed a 350 mile trip when I first heard it. It does not affect performance and checking the timing gear area, the dynamo and water pump all of which I have drawn a blank...no sound. Initially I thought it was coming from the inlet manifold. Going to do a compression test and send a fibrescope into the cylinders. As you say it seems not in time with revolutions of the engine...in truth I am lost. My thought was a lazy pushrod lifter. ?

Although it can be messy, if you run the engine with the valve cover off you can usually feel the odd one out if you put your thumb on the rockers. Might just change the sound too. Could be a sticky valve rather than a lifter. Try oiling the rocker gear, with a oil can of engine oil. Rocker gear can get gummed up and can benefit from a strip down and clean. Diesel is a good cleaner.

Clive - not wishing to perhaps spoil your day but we had similar on the Amazon a few years ago and despite examination of the timing gears etc when we got home, had to take the head off.
Bits of broken piston ring down No 1, therefore that piston was damaged with wreckage bouncing about. Also No 4 piston had a hole in it - all probably caused by persistant pinking in the past. Result - engine swap! Car still drove fine though - only Volvo! P |
