Hi all. I going to stick my neck out here, and risk getting very wound up. But hey, I've just gotta say it....

Here's the idea. Why don't members refrain from getting so personal on these forums. They are for all of us to make contact with other Volvo drivers, or would-be Volvo drivers, and to discuss technical topics that may be useful/interesting/save us £££'s on garage bills.

I've read and been on the receiving ends of some of these personal attacks, and to be honest I am disgusted that there are such petty and irresponsible people using these forums. I have been ridiculed for the past 11 years by my peers for being a Volvo driver. I do not expect to have a grown up discussion on these forums sabotaged by petty jeuveniles who think it big/clever/whatever to start calling those of us who submit posts to the forums names.

There is nothing self righteous or 'superior' about anyone who expresses the view that obeying the law is the right thing to do. There are those who use these forums to boast about how fast they have gone on a public road, who they have beaten 'racing' on a public road, and then there are those who believe they have the right to drive as fast as they see fit because they think they are safe over the limit and that it is acceptable to use speed camera detectors 'because it lets them slow down safely in time'.

Here's a reality check. Volvo drivers on the whole have a hard enough time from drivers of other car makes. We don't need to show how irresponsible and abusive we can be to add to the already unneccesary ridicule. Grow up.

I do not beleive everything on the forums should be censored. But perhaps if this behaviour continues, then maybe it's the only way. By all means discuss the relative merits and validity of speed limits, the use of speed camera detectors and such like, and of road rules/highway code etc. But we do not need to lower ourselves to school yard behaviour and bullying because people are too lazy to think about what they are saying and be considerate, and take responsibility for their actions.

And so that's it. Maybe if we were all more considerate in our daily life, took responsibility for our actions, and thought about the consequenses of our actions/words, then life would be just that little bit easier, and safer.

So just because I don't agree with the law, does not give me the right to flout it, and ridicule those who obey that law. How about we have a sensible discussion within these websites about these issues, and where appropriate lobby the relevant bodies and work with them to make the difference.

I look forward to hearing your restrained, positive views...

Judgeman.

It's easy to break the law, the challenge is obeying it.

Totally agree with judgeman here,
I think the only problem her is the minority who are mentioned above who have a lack of manners and basic lack of consideration for others,
i agree we have to sort it out soon
Wiling to help and hear all suggestions...

I have to say that I look in on these VOC forums pretty much every day.

I rarely see these posts that seem to bother you. One memorable thread that contained some unpleasant personal comment some months ago certainly had no connection with speeding or other bad behaviour on the road.

Those that I have seen on any subject are dealt with very swiftly by Bob.... rightly so.

It is a site open not only to VOC members so my feeling is we have to put up with the occasional post by a prat even if not a member.

Regards, Don.Norchi.

I fully agree with you, I've had this sort of problem on Yahoo.
Petty minded people with nothing better to do.
These people should start thier own chat room where they can insult each other, and leave the grown up sites to the more serious people.

The purpose of our Forum is to enable people to share information, ask for information be it technical or personal and to give opinion and debate as appropriate. The majority of people that contribute are enthusiasts who want to help others, there are a large number of members from all walks of life and all areas of the UK and the rest of that big World out there. The club is made up of a very wide variety of people from different professional and educational backgrounds. The variety of posts reflect the diversity of members' interests, attitude to law, society, intellect, education, literacy, technical knowledge and communication skills amongst a very, very long list. There are sections for all the main types of Volvos plus this section where the very nature of the topics are general.

The VOC forum is open to all people that register as long as they follow the general rules of posting that has been recently highlighted. We must have guidelines and rules otherwise postings could be offensive to VOC members and non-members and indeed against the law. This club is run in the main by unpaid enthusiasts who want to share their enthusiasm and knowledge not only to VOC members but non-members who need help and advice. We all must remember that whatever is posted is there for ever and that people that post material may be held legaly responsible for inappropriate and unlawful material. The problem with posted dialogue is that it a false environment where we cannot see the other person's reactions - what one person may deem normal may been seen in a different perspective by another party - this of course brings me to mention the consequences of peoples' actions again. We must consider the implications of what we write - many people don't, this results in bad feelings or the worse case scenario of legal action.

It is important that there is balance within the forums - what's the point of continual tit for tat threads - they go nowhere and upset some people that are genuine enthusiasts that enjoy visiting the forums. I consider the forums to be very worthwhile, however if things get too serious there is a life out there outside these forums - if it gets too serious people should walk away as life is far too short for petty bickering!

This is one of the few instances in life whereby if you ignore the problem then it will go away - it takes at least two to have an argument. If someone of the average age encountered here is ignorant, then they are that way for life, get over it, you won't change them.

I have had some sublime and some ridiculous vehicles in my time and have never been in the least bit bothered what anybody thought about my mode of transport. It is a personal thing and not everyone's tastes are the same, and trying to persuade or defend your choice to others is usually futile.

I have always loved performance Fords (and still do) and have had a few tasty examples (and a few embarassing ones) but I would not go to the RS Owners forum and argue how much better or worse my Volvo is. I would probably be lynched. If however the reverse were to happen on this forum, i.e. Escortboy were to come onto this forum and spout, he would likely be ignored. Ignored being the important adjective, might give them a dose of Athazagoraphobia.

IMHO, being ignored is far worse than being engaged in discussion.........

I fully agree with you Don. I have only seen one or two posts where it goes off topic and ends in a slagging match.
