I smell like exhaust!!
Hello,
I own a 73 Volvo 164e. I bought it a few months ago. Everytime I drive the car I smell like exhaust. Its so bad I need to change clothes or shower. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to get rid of this awful toxic smell? Thanks, Kevin |

Seems a bit obvious to say find out where the exhaust is leaking. If you can get it up on a lift that is good. Then get someone to hold a pad of rags or a folded leather clove over the end of the exhaust. Leaks should then be obvious. Fix 'em. If you have a non standard exhaust, and leaky trunk seals aerodynamics may allow fumes to come back through the trunk and into the car. Exhaust to manifold leaks combined with a poor or no seal around the steering column will also flow fumes into the car.

In addition to Derek’s advice, How far does the tailpipe extend past the bumper? If too short then the turbulence at the rear of the car can cause a backdraft and into the cabin.

I found a neat and very effective trick for finding exhaust leaks. Get a vacuum cleaner set to blow (swap outlets usually), seal that against the exhaust with a rag, blow air into the exhaust. If you then spray a mist of water and washing up liquid onto the exhaust/manifold, you get to see exactly where the leaks are..there will be lots of bubbles. Have fun.
