Paint Sources For A Newbie??
Hi
Have a 940 that I need to prime and topcoat a rebushed lower door hinge, and am looking at spraying this at home in the garage. In coming months I will also want to spray a couple of very small (at the moment) rust spots on the arch lip. Done minimal spraying before, and am a bit overwhelmed with options looking online. I have a small compressor and cheapo gun that came with it, and I do have a half face mask with dust and additional vapour mask. I am initially leaning towards cellulose as my kit isn't suitable for venturing into 2 pack. Would be interested to hear if anyone has any suggestions to perhaps best approach and/or suppliers for materials, or just go down colour matched rattle can route?? Cheers Steve Last edited by Steve 940; Apr 7th, 2022 at 07:09. |

For small stuff like a hinge Steve I’d use a rattle can for primer and top coat. It is also a lubricated area so rust is unlikely to be a problem.
Coded colour cans are available. |

Hi Moomoo,
That’s great suggestion, I’ve done a bit with colour coded rattle cans before but had in mind Ive got no doubt that further paint will be needed as I go through the seemingly endless to do list. Items known about so far as the hinge and rust spots, but had noticed door mirror backs on my 940 are black, and look a bit ‘odd’ especially as body is metallic grey. Was thinking of if it would be cheaper in the long run, if tto get say 1 lt topcoat colour matched, & thinners, would I need lacquer also?? As I said, im a complete newbie to finishing. Would just be nice to have paint to hand as and when needed. Cheers Steve |

Perhaps we are lucky here I don't know, but there is a paint factors in town[Humberside Paints]who will make up paint in any quantity from a touch up stick upwards either by using the paint code or by using colour swatches-you can either take say the fuel filler flap in for a comparison or they'll come out onto their car park if you drive the car there. As Moomoo says above for a door hinge I'd rattle can it for the arches it depends on how far you have to sand back to be clear of any rust and to get a feathered edge.

You do need to be very careful with two pack-unless you have a cheap body!!
Cellulose is still available and one of the easiest paints to work with:~ a visit to your local paint shop as previously mentioned with also give other safe types plus colour matching- most will transfer mixed paints into spray cans if you wish. A descent shop will also be able to give you sound advice regarding any compatible clear coats that may be required. Good Luck Regards Bob. (My local store also has the original paint chips & codes) Last edited by Bob Meadows; Apr 7th, 2022 at 10:33. |

I’ve used rattle cans for many and various paint repairs on my silver 1992 940, the bodywork of which is showing it’s age.
Normal repair prep. of sanding, filling, sanding, masking, priming etc. then the colour coats (a few) then some clear lacquer. I found that the “Volvo Silver” from Halfords and other factors was nowhere near an acceptable colour match but was near enough to build up a few coats of approximate colour before finishing with a couple of coats of colour and then lacquer from the genuine Volvo rattle cans bought from my main dealer. The precise colour being supplied as per the colour code on my car’s ID plate. Those Volvo cans are quite a bit more expensive per millilitre than the generic ones but worth it if you require a decent match. Good luck. Edit, I’d never thought of having a rattle can paint made to order by an Automotive Paint Supplier although many many years ago I did have a local supplier make up a Tekaloid match for my 1979 brown Morris Marina when I handed painted the entire body.

A couple from me... - I've recently (last 5 years) found cellulose hard to get, whilst some manufacturers still offer it, they haven't kept the colour/mixing charts up to date. A lot of the major paint suppliers have dropped it (PPG Flowline etc.) but I believe you can still get the Lechler Microfan products. However it does seem to react easily with other paint systems which makes its use for repairs a bit of a lottery. - Be very careful with 2K isocyanate paints, they can be lethal, I've seen some people applying it with just a charcoal respirator which can be suicide. I once had a very peculiar reaction just mixing the stuff which left me feeling odd for days. It can and has killed people. Hence if you want to use it - best with an air-fed mask fed from a compressor that's not in the same room and nowhere near the fumes. A decent HVLP gun is your friend here. With cellulose you should be okay with a activated charcoal respirator so long as the cartridges are in date and not saturated - get a good fitting one such as the Sundstrom SR100 with a pre-filter, particle filter (P3) and a gas filter (A1) from Arco. It's been said - for hinges and mirror backs - rattle cans are cheapest and easiest option.

Many thanks for all the contributions and information, and fully agree 2 pack not a DIY option.
Just checked my mask, and have a 3M half face mask with spare new dust particulate pre filters, and A2 Vapour Filters, so hopefully they should be good enough just for what I'm looking to do. Had a quick look online and we have a couple of automotive finish suppliers in Ipswich so I'll give them a call to see if they're interested in non trade stuff. Thinking some more I seem to recall Ken & Lyn paints??? being mentioned in Practical Classics mag so hopefully helpful to us DIY'ers if my local ones don't come up Love the thought of Ian's brown 1970's Marina😀😀 Cheers Steve Last edited by Steve 940; Apr 7th, 2022 at 12:51. |
