Oil in coolant tank
Hi all. New member so please be gentle. Have XC90 D5 AWD 2005. There is thick black oil full to bursting in the coolant header tank. oozes out when you unscrew the lid. Checked dip stick, oil virtually gone!! No mayo/emulsified oil on stick, so presumeably oil in water but no water in oil. Any advice would be appreciated.
Had service and cam belt change 2 months ago at Volvo City in Castleford west Yorkshire (independant volvo garage). If head gasket, any idea of price (cant afford volvo dealer!!!) Cheers Stu and Steph |

does sound like a head gasket to me, if no further damage done shouldn't be too dear at an indy.
good luck |

Keeping you posted. Taken to good garage this morning. He thinks too much oil for it to be head gasket, thinks its the oil cooler! Sounds cheaper!!
Will keep you posted. Cheers Stu n Steph |

I've seen it reported that during warmup the oil 'cooler' actually allows the fast warming coolant to warm the oil. So it really should be called the engine oil to coolant heat exchanger. On older design engines the engine oil did not have such a device. Is it the case that in these modern engines the engine oil is used to cool certain parts of the engine and so the temperature of the oil in the sump would rise if not for the 'oil cooler'? |

Oil in coolant tank
Hi hiam. Had to have cylinder head gasket done and new oil filter a few weeks ago. In fact we have now traded it for an xc60! Which we both love but isn't quite as big as the 90.
Thanks to all that posts replies. Stu n Steph. |
