Default Fair timing belt replacement cost?

I'm soon to ring Volvomax in Glasgow for a quote and probable booking in for a timing belt and tensioner on a 1.6 petrol '04 V40. Can anyone give me a ballpark figure for the quote from their own experience i.e. a non dealer specialist?

I guess any knowledge of backstreet garage and dealer charges would be interesting also.

I'm going to get the aux belt done at the same time, although I could easily do that myself. Also, is it worth getting the water pump done.....what is driven by the timing belt - I'm presuming only the water pump.

Multiple questions!.......thanks.

~£200 was the cost of mine last July by a north London independent. That included the fan belt as it was worn but not the aux belt.

Had mine done at local non volvo garage £136.00, but they did'nt expect it to take all day, they had honour the quoted price.
I've heard main dealers can charge £500+.

The garage had never done a V40 timing belt before and the mechanic doing the job was completely in the dark regards V40 engine. If your garage only charged you 1.5 hrs labour you did very well, it's my understanding that Volvo main dealers usually charge a minimum 4hrs labour.

Best to get them about 9:30ish. Just keep trying, I've seen me pop over from Hillington rather than call
Dougie will give you a decent price.

This section of the forum is specific to the S/V40, you may be best asking in the 300 series section of the forum. It was a few hundred for my S40's to be done last year at a local independent Volvo specialist so that may well be accurate, but shop around.
