Default 09 D5 Used Oil analysis.

Sent a sample of my engine oil, from when it was serviced on Tues off to be tested today. Hopefully should have the results back in a couple of weeks. quie interested to know whats going on inside the engine and what effect the 18,000 mile service interval has.

Car is an 2009 V70 D5 Geartronic R-design with 122,000 miles on the clock.

Anybody else considered getting a used Oil Analysis?

I get them through my work.
Same story. Wear appears satisfactory, recommend changing oil.
I have bloody changed it hence the sample !
The excessive sodium content is a good indicator of potential head gasket failure.

I also have it done quite regular as it costs very little and could give you an indication when to get rid of a vehicle as trouble looming.
The D5 on main dealer servicing (on my third with approx. 150K) has never shown anything untoward.

Why is it taking weeks, we get ours next day or 2 days at most from receipt? So from a Monday post normally get an e-mail on a Thursday.

On heavy and industrial diesels this is the basis of preventative maintenance and when to do your oil servicing.

When a sump holds 1000ltrs and its £4 a ltr for a decent mineral oil that’s 4K a change so every extra hour saves a lot.

That’s before you ship the oil off-shore and have to man handle it into a plant room on an oil rig.

The oil level will have most likely raised during DPF regens but it's never caused an issue. Not had to put any oil in at all between service intervals.

Where do you get your oil tested? I have sent mine to Blackstone Labs in America as they come highly recommended. Should take about a week to get there but I'm allowing 2 just in case.

Well it could be raised but it doesnt has to be raised , it all depends on the percentage biodiesel pre mixed , driving habits ,passive regens etc (for instance my dieselfuel has only 1% biodiesel but in the uk they use up to 7% in "regular " diesel )
But was it raised in your specific circumstance ?

tt82, sorry never seen this request. If your still interested in testing i will send you the Part number and details where to buy. The Lab is in Leeds so you should get back very quickly. They will also set your engine up on the system and trend for you if you wanted to say check at each interval.
This is useful if you do galactic mileage as it tells you when to sell!

You can also call and discuss your results if you want with them as they are done by people not machines.

I know a fair amount about UOA programs as it's used a lot for large marine diesels and aircraft engines that I have been working with.
At present I just use Blackstone Labs, although some of their comments are rather simplistic.

Sodium compounds are used in some conventional or part synthetic engine oils like Castrol GTX (Mostly cheap oils), so if you are interested in detecting early signs of a HG failure, it's best to avoid oils that already contain Sodium compounds, as they confuse the results.

HG issues will cause an increase in both Sodium and Potassium readings. The anti freeze mix can also cause a low viscosity figure and a rise in the insolubles percentage, because it reacts with the detergents trying to clean the block. Very bad news for the turbo bearings in particular.

I don't have the results from my last oil change with Shell Helix Ultra 5/40 (A3/B4) and half a can of Ceratec scanned, but it will be interesting to see if that fairly cheap combination can compare with some real good figures from top of the range Liqui Moly Synthoil 5/40 (A3/B4). The LM Synthoil was on special offer recently, so I'm going to cross check the results this winter. The last set seemed real close, but I did not use Ceratec with the first 2 runs of Synthoil.
