After owning it for 13 years our much loved Silver 940 GLE 16v 2.3 has died with an oil pump failure. It happened on the 13th! Is this the end of its life?
Mileage about 160k but that's a guesstimate as the odometer stuck at 126,317 in 2008. However that's about the only thing that doesn't work. Passed MOT in July with 2 new tyres. Rear LHS lamp unit replaced in June. Fabric upholstery but very clean car inside and out. Sun-roof, dog guard. I've got records and receipts for maintenance on it since 2000. ![]() It is at a friend's place in Pencader, West Wales where we've only been offered scrap value. Is it worth more than that to any Volvo fan or parts dealer? I'll be grateful for your advice or suggestions. |

I'm no expert, but I would imagine that depends on a number of factors, critically one being how long it was running for after the oil pump failed.

if the cylinder head survived then someone on here might want it.

Well, it's an external oil pump on the B234F so I'd suggest changing that and seeing what the engine sounds like with new oil in. If you drove it to seize point the engine is probably fubarred, but it'll be the bottom end that has taken the brunt and I think (I think) that you can still get undergrind shells so your worst case scenario is likely to be remove and rebuild engine.
I had a new engine in my B234F a year or so back when my daughter thought it was air-cooled, but I already had a spare engine in stock. The mecco charged £700 to swap lumps so I guess you might get away with a bill of under a grand - well worth it since I have seen it said that there are only 22 B234F estates left on the road in the UK. Of course there might also be damage to the cam bearings and AFAIK they cannot be shelled. |

I've been thinking. If the oil pump seized, the oil pump shaft would have stopped going round - and one corner of the cambelt drives that (hence the advice to change the oil pump bolt when doing the cambelt) so it seems VERY likely that you dropped the cambelt and bent all the valves that were in "down" position at the time and so on and so on.
