Starting 2.5 LPT engine unused for 4 years
Hello there,
My 1998 V70 2.5T has been sitting for a number of years. I would like to get it back on the road, but am worried about lack of oil around the pistons, etc, after this time and possible damage when I would try to start it. Might anyone be able to advise me on the best approach to take? Many thanks. |

I'd take the plugs out and spin the engine on the starter for a few minutes to get some oil around. Do this for 20 seconds or so at a time, to save overheating the starter motor perhaps? May need to re-charge the battery after this, but plugs back in and give it a go. Make sure that the plug leads are as far away from the plug holes as you can, to ensure a stray spark doesn't ignite the mixture coming out of the plug holes - or better still, disable the fuel pump while doing this.
I've done this on a number of engines that have lain idle for many years, and it's always worked fine for me.

Hello there , your answer was given partially correctly .
Remove spark plugs , add a SMALL amount of engine & diesel mix via plug holes . Leave plugs out and turn engine by crankshaft nut for 10 -20 turns , after oil mix has sat over night . This allows oil mix to seep past rings & lubricate piston skirts & bores . Once you have turned by hand , THEN use starter motor , this will eject any remaining oil mix . Refit spark plugs , a quick sniff of aerosol brake cleaner & fire that puppy right up . Petrol will most likely be stuffed and engine run like crap , just allow it to idle & warm through . DO NOT rev any more than is necessary to keep engine running

Turning the engine over by hand first seems an excellent idea. Might it be worth a quick look at the timing belt before using the starter motor?
