There was an assortment of drive lines that came under Amazons. What year is your car? Which style of carrier does yours have now? What size is the m41's flange?

If Volvo had been fitting overdrives to 1970 Amazons they would have been using the J type OD the same as they were fitting to B20 140 models. Transition from D to J OD's came with the change from B18 to B20. You have a D type. That is not a problem but you're more likely to have a flange mismatch. Mismatch will likely be with the number of splines rather than bolt pattern but as you say there are several different types. Did this box/OD come with a flange on it? Will it mate up with the one on you cars prop? In the conversion you can lose the flywheel disk. You will need the correct crossmember or you can modify your own. Your existing front shaft can be cut down and if necessary an early one can donate the front yoke and matching flange for the matching flange on the this OD or you can obtain and shorten a late B18 one.

There is no such thing as a big flange prop intended for an Amazon. All he needs is asmall flange OD prop with a late centre bearing and it'll work. The D type is a smidgin shorter than a J type but that isn't an issue, the sliding yoke will compensate. Ergo his existing prop cut down will work. Going the other way, fitting a J type overdrive to any age of 120, can cause issues because the props can be a bit long and lock on the slider and because of flange size problems. He does not need a crossmember; 120 series crossmembers for OD and non overdrive boxes are identical. They're not on a 140 but they are on a 120. No M40 flange will fit an M41, regardless of age or type of overdrive. No D type OD flange will fit a J type or vise versa regardless of age, size or origin. I have a short driveline section with the later carrier and small (~85mm) flange. But I'm across the pond. If you can't do it over there I can mail it over...
I can post photos if it would help. Chris |
