Realistic MPG for 2.0D and 2.4
I'm in the market for a new company car, and after previously owning a V50 2007 MY 2.0D, am thinking about a V70. The V50 was a great car, but is a little small for the family, especially the boot. I only ever managed to get about 45 mpg from that engine, in a fairly light car.
I'd be looking at either a 2.0D SE Lux or a 2.4D SE Lux, but I'm a little frightened by the fuel consumption figures I've seen on here. I know they're a big car but I wonder if anyone would be willing to indicate what real world mpg they are getting from these engines. I think that I'm a fairly economical driver - at the moment I have an A4 1.9 Tdi and I'm getting 50 mpg from that - mostly on urban motorway at around 60 - 65 mph. I do 20 - 25k per annum and I don't get company fuel so this is a substantial investment! I would tend to think that the 2.0D would probably be okay, but I'm a bit worried about the lack of power in the V70. I'd prefer a 2.4D but from what I'm reading on here about the D5 the average mpg must be less than 40? In which case, it's really not economical for me to choose this. Thanks in anticipation Iain |

Hi blaze591. I have driven my D5 from new for about one month now and have covered just over 4,000 miles. So far the computer tells me that average mpg is 39.5 and that is about 70% motorway driving (mixed speeds due to traffic but mainly 70 - 80mph) and 30% town. If you did have a heavy foot I suspect this could drop significantly, although to counter that, the engine still has to loosen up a little I suspect.
Hope this is of use. Regards, Mark. |

For example, my MY03 V70 D5 is telling me it's averaging 39 when in the current weather it's only giving me 33-4. The only way to accurately get your MPG is to do a 'fill-to-fill' test. |

"Brim to Brim" I get around 35MPG - 80% motorway (@80-85mph) - 20% town. + Very cold winter starts + winter tyres.
% = distance Mine is a remapped D5. At a steady 60-65mph on a motorway you will get a lot better economy - I think my best for a 250kmh round trip was around 50mpg |

Don't be confused by the older 2.4 V70's (up to about 2006 I think) actually get much better mpg than the new models, that's why you'll see some figures around in excess of 50mpg (using the computer)

Mines a 2007 2.4d auto and driven easily gets 39-42 which is not bad for a car this size. Don't think the 6 speed auto offers much car spends the first few seconds changing gear upwards but it might be useful if you've a very heavy load on. Should expect 45 from a manual??

been doing a lot of very short cold runs and computer is showing 18.7,usually does about 22 on mostly short runs ,best ever was 39 ,and that was deliberately trying to see what it would do to mpg, usually drive for economy with the occasional blast to keep the engine clean, September 08 2.4d v70 geartronic apart from ,this,a nice car and a brilliant tow car

I was horrified when I first had mine and did only short runs in town. I now average 40mpg through sensible driving - with constant motorway cruises at 70mph returning 45mpg. I have become quite sanguine over the economy - it isn't as good as I would have liked - but will pay that price for the comfort the car offers - and as you said the superb towing capabilities - with 1900kg hanging off its arse mine will still return an average of 26mpg |
