Default v50 or not to v50....

That is the question of course!

I think its time for a change.
I have had my 54 plate XC70 D5 Geartronic for 40,000 miles and over two years now and its been faultless (except for the cost of fuel and tyres!!)

I no longer need such a big car or awd and would like a manual for a change!

Having done a lot of reading, I am a little perturbed by the V50s bad rap, but then there must be plenty of happy users out there as well.

As far as I can tell I'd be better off getting the D5, from what I have read its a more reliable engine (obviously quicker also) and produces the same (if not better!) economy as the 2.0D, with the tax being a fraction more.

If I chuck a couple of grand on top of the XC70 I seem to be able to get an 07-08 plate D5 with 50-60k on the clock which seems like a pretty good deal to me.

I just wondered what peoples thoughts / opinions were?

Bad rep? I adore my v50, best car I've had! On the motorways cruising in 6th it just eats up the miles!

I purchased a 57000 mile V50 2.0D SE in November. I'm very pleased with it. As good as any A4, Saab or Merc I've had or BMW I've driven. Comfortable, not too big, reasonably economical. Go for it!

I too have a 2.0D, it is a great car, not sure why anyone would think it was slow.....it has very very good acceleration and great fuel economy.

Likewise, I have had BMW's, Audis and Volkswagens......it is as good as any of them!

It is much smaller inside than the V70 , i would keep the V70 if it were me as its fuel consumption is so good . You will spend money , have a smaller car which uses maybe more fuel than the one you have already ... If you drive a V50 and like it then not much wrong with them !

Thanks chaps!
I appreciate the internet is somewhat bias to those with bad experiences but the vibe wasn't great with regards to reliability of the 2.0

I definitely like the idea of a smaller car!
The 2.0 was a nice drive so I figure the d5 can only be better!!

I only get 32mpg from the xc70!

I've done over 47K miles since new in my V50 2.0D, and the only thing that has gone wrong was a dealer-fit parking sensor.

I normally get 42-45mpg and over 50mpg on a run. I'm very pleased with it.

Default Mines great!

I've a 58 plate 2.0D powershift.....
I've driven it nearly 75000 miles, mostly motorway, I average 48+ mpg. Cruise control on at indicated 73, GPS says that is just 70 officer....... If the air con is off, and it isn't raining, or windy, I often average 52 over a week to work. 550 miles, 480 on the M6/M55 with cruise control on - traffic permitting.

It's the best cat I've owned, gearbox is superb. Why oh why have Volvo taken it off the current V50 range. A V60? Think I'm made of money? Although the plug in hybrid might be cheaper on fuel......

A V70 is definately bigger. Size depends on your needs - when we take the (adult!) kids on holiday this year we'll take the wifes car. (V70 2.4 - 51 plate with only 120K on the clock....)
