Default Oil, oil, oil

Hello, If your car is turbocharged I'd give consideration to using a 0W-30 oil with an ACEA A3,B3 rating. These will be synthetic oils. Turbochargers raise the temperature of any engine and I'd give my turbo's bearings all the help I could. If it is not then I'd consider any 5W-30 conventional oil. People will get all bent out of shape over oil selection. How much you drive and where you drive should be factored in. Some engines are known to run dirtier than others. For my money the additives in a 0W-30 oil have helped prolong the life of the turbos in the family. For all I know regular oil changes alone may have done the job. In the case of turbocharged engines I'll risk over spending a bit. 5W-30 and 10W-30 oils are more than good enough for non-turbos like mine. Go to Bobistheoilguy{dot}com for all the oil talk you could possibly want. One basic consideration in the arguement between conventional vs. synthetic oils is whether or not you intend to extend your oil change interval. I subscribe to the "out with the old" school of thought. That's why conventional is my choice. Whatever you think, feel or believe; don't neglect your oil changes. Kira

I followed the Mobil oil selector for my V70 petrol 2.4 170 and my wife's 2007 XC90 petrol 3.2 (both naturally aspirated). It gave Mobil1 5W-30 Extended Performance for both.

I normally change at 1-year intervals, but right now the oil has been in the XC90 for 14 months and about 8 kmi. The oil level has not gone down by any perceptible amount in that 18 months and the oil is clear light-to-medium amber. I have the 8 qtUS of fresh oil in the back of the XC90, but can't seem to get to the dealer 12 mi away. We drive our cars carefully and get better than average mpg results. I count on this helping the oil to last longer, but I do mean to get the oil changed soon.

I used to change the oil myself, but it got to be too much trouble. I keep meaning to get one of those suction oil removers so I can change the oil in the XC90 without getting under the vehicle at all.

See http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...leChooser.aspx.

0w-30 or 5w-30 won't make any difference to the oils viscosity when hot. Will only be beneficial in winter if exteremly cold outside to aid starting. In my opinion stick to 5w-30
Asda recently were selling 4L of 5w-30 Magnatec for £10, bargain of the year. Keep your eyes peeled for deals like this and stock up.

didn't tell us about condition and mileage of your car, and oil you currently use. shouldn't swap semi synthetic for fully synthetic one. if use fully synthetic best for you will be 5w-30.

Hello, The significance of the 0W-30 oils has little to do with viscosity. The A3,B3 oils have a turbocharger bearing additive. I mentioned the high temperatures of turbos and failed to mention the additive package in that sentence. I ain't no English composition teacher, sorry. Seriously, what I find interesting about all the many oils out there is that so few have that additive package and the tell-tale "0W-X" weight. They don't cost more and they go on sale too. You just have to find them. In my part of the USA Castrol sells a 0W-30, Mobil sells a 0W-40. Both say "European Formula" on the bottle. Amsoil sells one or two A3,B3 rated oils as well. If requested, I'll provide the best, unscientific, unbelievable, unrepeatable anecdotal evidence of A3,B3 oils' benefits. Kira
