Hi all. Just got a 2003 (October) V70 D5 diesel and found - too late I’m afraid – that someone had siliconed the near side door mirror glass in place. I only found it when I tried to adjust it and it wouldn’t move. I have managed to get the silicone off the edges of the glass but it is obvious that there is still a lot behind it as it is still firmly fixed.
I do not know how the original mirror is fixed into the moving bits behind the glass as I have never had to take one to pieces before and do not want to force the issue until I know more about what I am doing as well as having a proper replacement on hand. I am guessing that there are some kind of clips that attach it but searching on line has only confused as it seems that there are several different versions. Can anyone offer a suggestion or advice please? |

YouTube videos are the problem. There are so many variations and I simply do not know which one is fitted to my car. What I really need is a good, fairly large size exploded diagram. I am easily able to see what is what in an exploded diagram but the only ones I have found are from companies selling replacement mirrors and they are all too small to properly see the details. Enlarging them just makes them blurry. Has anyone got one please?

Hi Simmy,
I have seem stuck on glass replacements on other cars but this doesn’t look like it has been done here. The entire moveable glass was completely surrounded by silicon. At first I thought that was all that was stopping it from moving but after a lot of softening with Isopropyl alcohol and easing the silicon off the surround with a carpet hook in a Stanley knife I finally got all the visible silicon. At this point even applying manual force the mirror would not move. Looking around the edges I can see more silicon BEHIND the mirror and that is what is now holding it. It still cannot be adjusted and I am very unhappy looking at the sky in it when I am driving. I have not bought a replacement yet as, once again, I do not know exactly what to buy (or from where) until I get the old one off. I do not want to just jam something behind the glass and try to lever it off as I am afraid I will damage something, the fittings or electrical bits, that are behind the glass. This is why I am asking about a good exploded diagram of the internals. |

I used some of this stuff recently on our shower cubicle. It worked well, but needs time to work. I've no idea whether it would prove incompatible with other components of the mirror assembly, but if you're desperate...
