T3 Geartronic verdict
So wife’s current car is due for replacement in May.
Stupidly I arranged test drive plus over the weekend and now she’s kind of smitten. Obviously the T4 RDesign Pro AWD may have something to do with it and I’ll make sure she’s acquainted with a more realistic spec. Does anyone have the T3 geartronic and what’s your verdict on the 3 cylinder with the auto box?

We replaced my wife’s V40 with a T3 Geartronic XC40 last July. As there was a 10 week waiting time, I had plenty of time to worry about whether we had done the right thing or not, but we have not been disappointed.
The car has a surprising get up and go for such a small engine and the gearbox suits the engine well, with nice smooth gearchanges. On the road, it is quiet at most speeds, but the is a little roughness when accelerating hard, just to remind you that there is a 3 cylinder engine up front. Mixed driving is giving about 41 mpg, but my wife never uses the “eco” drive mode; when I drive it, I always switch to eco and usually see 44 or 45 mpg on any trip over 10 miles long, which I think is very reasonable for a vehicle of that size. The only time that having the small engine was really apparent was when we were away to a wedding in the Lake District with friends and the combined weight of 4 (large) adults and their associated luggage and gifts must have been approaching half a ton; progress was good, but overtaking uphill had to be well planned! We both enjoy driving it; it is a very good car but, if I had to criticise it, I would say that the power train does not have the refinement of my V90, but then again not many cars do.

I have had my T3 Geartronic for about 10 weeks. Everyone comments how smooth and quiet it is. As stated above, does sound a bit like a diesel when floored, but hardly need to do that as quite happy wafting around.
The only minor criticism is when reversing using the bleepers. To be able to creep needs good foot control (brake and accelerator) as it tends to snatch a bit. But you get used to it. Anyway, this one is going back as I am changing jobs (company car) and now need to buy my own car, so have ordered the same, due in March. |
