Default Problem with my knob

I bought the car a present to celebrate its MOT in the form of a wood-look gear knob. (I have the lift-for-reverse type, reverse to the left of first.) Managed to get the old knob off thanks to instructions from seller. But only then did I notice that the new one has a narrower hole in the bottom of it underneath, and there doesn't appear to be room for the plastic bit that is attached to the gear stick gaiter and that you lift to select reverse gear to slide up into it as with the old one. So if I fit it on to the stick it looks as if I won't be able to select reverse...

Am I just being stupid?
Did they change the design?
Is there a way around the problem - e.g. can I get a new-style gaiter with a narrower lift-bit attached to it that will fit my car and let me use the new knob?

It's flipping enormous and (slightly embarrassingly) square and (worse) grey, which is why I chose the slightly slimmer, sleeker, more rounded and generally more attractive wooden one. (Not that I was having any problems pulling the old one, you understand.)

hmm that is a strange one. Sometimes a little bit of lubrication will ease it in if you push it hard in the bottom. Also there the a protective skin (on some models) that you can slide back.

Let me know how you get on. It does seem a hard one to play with!

You're talking about this one, right?

The above collar appears to have a more narrow sleeve unlike your own which should look like this...

I guess you'll also need the collar & gaitor from Chelle_Belle.

Thank you - that's very good of you - but I'm holding out for some insight from the wizards on here for the time being... There surely must be a way.
