Default Cheap tart up

Well, as my engine didn't turn out to be a stuffed as I thought, I dont have to pull it out to recondition. therefore I thought a little tarting up was in order.

Last weekend I covered the engine in degreaser (£5), then waterblassed it all.
That night I painted all the bits I could reach easily with some cheap helfords engine enamel (£5 + £2 for the brush). I applied 3 coats leaving 30 minutes between coats. I think it came up quite well.

Next i thought I should sort out the radiator. I was always considering going for a closed circuit one, so havent bothered cleaning the old one up. I also considered polishing up the copper on the current one.

As the solder etc was pretty bad, I decided to use some more cheap Helfords engine enamal and see what happened. Cost another £5 and another £2 for another brush.

I forgot to take after photos, so here is another thing I jsut did tonight.

Pre and post under-bonnet sound proofing from Brookhouse (£30). I don't know if it makes a difference yet. I've only done this as I work quite antisocial hours, and tend to wake my Wife and kids in the morning. I'm hoping to mute the worst of the engine noise with this. If it doesnt work it will be a shame, as I really liked the mirror effect of the 'naked' bonnet.

You can see the painted radiator in the bonnet photos.

Just got a text from my Wife: "The Volvo was a lot quieter this morning".

Success on the sound proofing then!

I did notice the noise from inside seems to be comming from lower down. Ie, the engine noise leaks through from under the dash rather than the demist vent area.

Looking good

Now that I seem to have stopped the oil leaks (breathers were clogged), I have no excuse for getting my engine bay to look smart too!

Noise lower down - possibly from where the steering column goes through the bulkhead?

ok, I give up. Whats meant to be blocking the hole around where the steering column goes through the bulkhead?

I didnt have anything, one other car I looked at had what looked like old seat cushion foam ramed in there and I couldn't find anything that looked like it would fit (except part 29, a square thing on page 265 of the parts manual .pdf which I don think is it).

Is there some rubber seal around this, or should I just load it up with dum-dum and see what happens?

I also dont have any seal where the throttle linkage heads through the firewall. It looks like it should be some O-ring type setup which shouldnt be too hard to sort out.

Then there are the under-dash air vents. They dont seem to close fully with the cables. I guess thats just adjustment. I was getting a sore back trying to get my head under there before I could be bothered fixing that though.

I bought one of these:

So I will see if that will quieten things down at the source anyway.
