Red face Pranged!

Hi all.

Reversed into a wall yesterday! (Feel like a wally).

Damage done (see pic):
  • Cracked outer light (right side)
  • Scratched bumper, especially the grey plastic trim/moulding
  • Bumper is bent out of shape and come away from the body near the wheel arch (see photos).
  • Small dent and scratches on body (between light and bumper)

It doesn't look too bad, but is the sort of thing that will cost hundreds to get sorted properly, but probably not that difficult to do myself.
  1. Is it worth looking for non-genuine/aftermarket lights? If so, where? Or is is easier simply to go to ebay/breakers yard and pick up a second-hand one?
  2. How easy is it remove the grey plastic bumper trim/moulding on phase 2 V40? (And are the S40 and V40 rear bumpers identical?)

Thanks.

Cool

You can't call that kind of damage a prang. My partner has such an incident every month at least, although her favourite target is rocks around car park edges or company vans. A bit of clear epoxy on the light and some touch up paint will sort things out.

Yes, I admit that you can't call it "serious damage", more like "really annoying damage".

The bumper trim/moulding is heavily scratched, so not sure if touch-up paint would be enough to sort that. And the light is pretty badly damaged - not sure what's holding all the pieces of it together to be honest. And I need to pull the bumper out as well.

S40, V40 bumpers are the same. It is easier to remove the bumper than the trim imho. Check where the bumper has come off near the wheel arch. There should be 3 bolts attaching the bumper to the wheel arch cover and one bolt/or screw going upwards securing the bumper to the frame of the car. Check the latter one to see if it's broken. Not sure if your OH bumped the car, or just scraped it. If bumped you should check if the support bar has been bent.

Hi there. Thanks for that. I was definitely a bump rather than a scrape, so I should check the support bar then, just one thing: where is the support bar? And have I got to take the bumper off, or can it be seen by getting under the car?

PS It was me that did it, not the good lady, unfortunately!

lol. Oops. Apologies to your lady. Not sure how the idea got in my head.... lol.

With regards to the support bar, I am not sure if you can see it from under the car. I will need to check that tonight when I get it and let you know.

I actually have a black rear bumper from a 2003 V40 but I need to check what condition it is in first. That is if you go down the replacement route. Personally, I don't think it is that bad anyway and I would try to cover it up.

If you don't mind a drive to East London/Essex, then you are more than welcome to come over and I can give you a hand fitting it.

If however you decide to do it yourself, I can take some pics of what needs doing.

Oocha!

Halfords sell plastic bumper filler, specifically for this purpose, as does ebay.

Apply, sand, sand again, prime and paint.

By the way, what's the best grade of sandpaper to use on a) the glossy black bumper and b) the matt dark grey bumper moulding?

Thanks.
