Default Key Tag - is it worth it?

I’ll be getting a new XC60 in early 2024 and it will have keyless entry. Is it worth getting a key tag? I think they’re about £75 now, so not too much in the big scheme.

I hate having a bulky set of keys so the idea appeals, but what are the downsides, apart from not being able to change the battery, and the risk of getting locked out (a risk I’m happy to take)?

Low battery is the only real downside.....except if you class not having a physical metal key as a problem (I don't).

Mines booked in to have two new sport tags early January.....the big keys shall be left at home thereafter.

For me there are two reasons I won’t get them.

1. Keytag is smaller, I’d just leave it in my pocket and the constant radio signals going between the keytag and the car would supposedly pass thru my b@lls and gentleman sausage. A thought which I’m not a fan of.

2. With a keytag I can’t remotely open the boot which I use all the time.

That’s just me tho and we’ve all different needs so good luck and hope you’ll like it 😊

1. Wise words
2. That’s a good point. I’ll have the ‘waving my feet spuriously under the bumper’ unlocking system but I reckon it won’t be a substitute for remote opening on all occasions.

😊
That's not how it works. The keytag (and the other keys for that matter) only listen for a lock/unlock request. In this state there is no RF transmission from the key. Upon receiving a lock/unlock request that's sent by the car when the door handle is touched, the key transmits a 'verified' code for a few milliseconds. This is the only time that RF is emitted by the key. As such it is insignificant. (If the key was transmitting constantly the battery wouldn't last a month.)

If you are worried about your knackers, you should turn off the Wi-Fi at home and in the car as these are constantly transmitting RF at a level hundreds of times greater than the key. Oh, and leave your phone permanently in Airplane mode for the same reason.

You can unlock your car via the Volvo car app, or even Volvo assist can remotely unlock your car, (you need your pin code for the later)
You can hide a normal key fob in the car which is deactivated when you lock your car so if you have a problem with the sports key you can use the Volvo car app on your phone to unlock the tailgate to access the normal fob.
It is a good idea to check the hidden fob now and again to ensure the battery is not dead as it could be there for a very long time.

I always forget the app! Rest assured, when I find myself locked out, I’ll be cursing and will completely forget that I can simply unlock using my phone. I’ll blame it on age.

Good luck with explaining that to the insurance Co if the car is nicked.

Every policy I have ever read excludes left cover if the key is "in or on the vehicle and the vehicle is unattended". In all the thefts I have also heard of, the insurance company asks for all the keys to investigate this.

The key is deactivated and will not work if car is broken into, the car has be be unlocked to reactivate the key fob, Volvo say to use the sports key when at the beach etc to lock the normal key in the car in glove box, locking the car via keyless entry will deactivate the normal key. That is what it is for.
